Nordic Spitz - Breed Description

The Nordic Spitz is used mainly for game bird hunting, but they are also efficient small game and elk hunters. Some also bark bears.

The Nordic Spitz is a small dog, slightly longer than its height at the withers, well-balanced and tightly built with well developed muscles. In character they are smart, fearless and very agile. As a hunting dog the breed should be alert and daring. They are keen, lively, friendly, open and self-confident.

The Nordic Spitz is calm and obedient, well adapted to urban areas and as a family pet. Because of this, their popularity has grown steadily in recent years, although their primary function is hunting.

Nordic Spitz have been under our breeding programme only in the last 30 years, so as a breed is still inconsistent, or to put it positively, diverse in type. This is due to the breed's ‘youth' and the still open breed-register (which is monitoring breeds from the natural population) and to the fact that there are still throwback features. Size is the greatest variable. There is also still a lot of diversity in coat quality, colour and length. To a certain extent they also vary in build and breed type.

The breed improvement programme does not allow work on the breed's appearance to lead to changes that would jeopardise the health of the dog or its work as defined by the standard. Diversity can also be an asset.
